Day 12

What do you feel has been the most significant world event that has taken place in your lifetime and why?

Im going to be a copycat and do what Shenna did. It was September 11, 2001. Here's what I wrote on September 11 2009:

I remember that day very well. I was on my way home from running some errands. My friend Jamie called me on my cell phone and asked me if I had heard the news. What news? I hadn't heard anything. She told me that a plane had just crashed into one of the twin towers in NYC and that people were frantic. No one knew what was going on. I rushed home and turned on the tv. I was 19 years old. As I sat there, watching the tv, i was stunned. I was speechless. I was numb. I watched as they played the tape over and over again. The plane hitting the tower. The people jumping out of the building trying to save themselves but at the same time knowing that they couldnt.I called my mom at work. Now I was frantic. I was screaming, crying and told her what had happened. She asked if I needed her to come home. I said yes. I needed her to come home. I was so scared.I remember feeling so heartbroken for all those people. I couldnt imagine the fear they must have felt. They knew they were going to die. They had families. They had children. They were husbands, wives, grandparents. Parents.I remember watching the courageous fireman and police officers running into the buildings. Risking their own lives.I remember when the towers collapsed. The whole city engulfed in a grey cloud of smoke. I remember the bridge. People trying to escape. They were running. Screaming.I felt like my heart was literally breaking. I couldnt breathe. I coudnt stop crying.I went over to Jamie's that night and we stayed up the whole night watching the news. Talking about those poor, innocent people. So many dead. No answers as to who was responsible or why this had happened. As I look back, 8 years later. I still feel the heartbreak. I feel for the families, the loved ones of all the people who were lost that day. It brings tears to my eyes to see the pictures of ground zero. The people still mourning the deaths of their loved ones.I remember right after 9/11. People were driving around with american flags on their cars. everyone had a flag in their yard. We were proud to be who we are and we werent going to stand for what had happened. That is why I love this country. Because like my intelligent older sister said, america is one big family. We pick on eachother and we do wrong to one another, but when someone threatens us or our country, we band together and stand up for it.My thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of all those who where lost that day.I will never forget.
